8-2 2018/2019 Assignments

Thesis paper and presentations are due on Monday, April 29th. Please refer to the instructions previously posted on Google classroom.

Just a reminder that we have a vocab quiz tomorrow on the words from the Diary of Anne Frank  Act I. Study!

Journal Write - Since we are beginning the Holocaust unit, I would like you to think about how literature is important in remembering past historic events. Why do you think people still care about things that happened long ago? How can literature help us remember and honor the victims of the Holocaust? How can readers/students use what they learn from literature based on the Holocaust to impact the future? Please follow journal format.

Research 3-5 different countries of the world that you would like to work on for your thesis essay who has or has had people flee from that country any time after 1975. The essay title is "The Plight of the Refugee."

Read and complete the 4 questions for the article on the Syrian refugees. Each question must be answered thoroughly, citing text evidence, and in paragraph form of 4-6 sentences each. Will be graded as a quiz.

Lent Word Cloud - Please use the hand template to create a word cloud using words relating to Lent and the Easter season. All words used must be religious words. You may not use words in your word cloud that are related to the commercial Easter holiday. The word Lent should be written on the front cover along with a drawing of a religious symbol. Another religious symbol should be drawn on the inside left side of the hand. The word cloud belongs on the inside right side of the hand. You are expected to include about 40-50 religious words in your word cloud. When creating your word cloud, please think of a scheme of color and design. Words should be written in various sizes, positions, and colors. The back of the right side of the hand must be glued on to a piece of construction paper. Will be graded.

Complete Text Dependent Questions for Inside Out and Back Again Parts 2, 3, and 4. Be sure to answer in complete, restated sentences, answer in your own words first and then cite evidence. Will be graded.

On your Ipad, define vocab words using a dictionary and according to context.

Complete Fragments and Run-Ons worksheet pgs. 28 and 29. Will be graded.

President Presentation - Should be done as a Powerpoint or Google Slides. You will present your project to the class. Presentations should have 15 slides, one of those slides will be your Bibliography/Works Cited page. You may add pictures but they should not take up the majority of the space on the slide. You slides should include important and thoughtful information about the president. Slides should include:

Graded as a test out of 50 points. Grade will include: content, originality, factual relevance and accuracy, organization, eye contact, volume, inflection and tone, audience engagement, attitude and effort, knowledge of material presented.

Part 1 Saigon Questions due on Wed. Answer questions in your own words and cite text evidence when necessary. Remember to be thorough in your answers. Will be graded as a quiz.

 

Study - Tomorrow will be the short answer portion of the Part 1 test. Wednesday will be the vocab and multiple choice portion. Reread and study vocab.

Create a list of 5 presidents that you would like your presentation to be about. We will choose your topic in class.

"My Musical Journey" essay due tomorrow. Must be 2 paragraphs written in Times New Roman or Arial, 13 or 14 font, 1.5 or double-spaced. 10-15 sentences in each paragraph. Include a heading and title.

1st paragraph: past musical history - Some things to consider for your paragraph: Who/what influenced your musical interests? Do certain songs, singers/groups, genres remind you of specific memories? Do you/did you play a musical interest or sing in a chorus/choir?

2nd paragraph: current musical interest - Some things to consider for your paragraph: What type of music do you listen to now? Why? What is it about certain artists or songs that grab your attention? Who is your favorite artist and why? Do specific genres speak to you? Why? Can you relate to an artist and their music? Why? 

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay - due Fri. 1/25

 

Please begin to work on the essay. The template for the essay will be given tomorrow in class. Follow the essay guidelines. 2 paragraphs of 10-15 sentences each. Do not answer in question/answer format. You must write an essay. The questions/bullets below are just a guideline of points for you to address in your essay.

Please write a cinquain poem on the template given in class today. Refer back to your notes and class discussion on how the poem is to be written. Your poem will be based on Thanksgiving but  can't be that word. It must be a word that has two syllables and pertains to Thanksgiving.  Please follow the poem pattern for lines 2-5. Template is to be glued on to a fall-colored piece of construction paper. Poem will be graded as a test based on content, if poem structure was followed correctly, originality, punctuation and spelling, presentation and creativity, and neatness. 

The Medicine Bag test on Tuesday, Nov. 13th. Please study all notes and format we discussed in class.
