5th Grade ELA-2019-2020 Assignments

Please log in to iReady and take the Reading Diagnostic Test assigned to you. You do not have to finish it all in one day, you can finish it tomorrow if you'd like, but I'd like it to be done by tomorrow afternoon so I can pass the results on to your 6th grade teacher!

P.S. I am so sorry for not posting Holes yesterday! I had some technical difficulties, but I will be recording it this morning. I will hopefully have it posted today, so you can enjoy it with your family this weekend if you haven't already watched it!

You will have a test on chapters 21-33 (**NOT 21-40**) this Friday, June 5th. I changed the chapters so we will have the opportunity to discuss all of the chapters that will be on the test during Zoom tomorrow.

We will talk about the important events from chapters 21-33 tomorrow during our Zoom session. If there is anything you are wondering, anything you may have noticed, or any questions you have about what has happened in these chapters, have it written down and ready to share or ask!

There are some difficult and uncomfortable events that have happened in these chapters. We will spend some time talking about these also.

I will update the answers on the study pages and the discussion questions up to chapter 30 in your study materials section by noon today.

2. After you watch the video, please read the first 3 chapters of Holes!
- If you have a copy of the book, it is pages 3-10.
- If you are reading a digital copy, since there are no page numbers, just use the table of contents to find the start of chapter 1 and then read until you reach the end of chapter 3.

This week, we will be working on fluency. You will read the same passage each day, with different questions to answer each day. Pacing Suggestion:
You should not finish this all in one day. I have given you three days to complete this. My suggestion is you work on Project 1 for the first two days; draft out your ideas on day 1, and then edit and revise on day 2. Day 3 should be for the second project (from projects 2-6) and putting the finishing touches on everything. This is just a suggestion of how you should complete the project to make sure you are using your time wisely. You may completed it however you like and in any order.

Everything has changed for Esperanza since her thirteenth birthday. She has had to cope with the loss of both her father and her home. Now she has to adjust to the new living conditions in the migrant camp and her new status as a poor peasant. Imagine you are Esperanza, and, using well-developed paragraphs (at least 4-5 sentences in each), write a journal entry describing all of the adversity (difficulties) that you have faced over the last few months.
Choose at least 4 topics from the list below or other appropriate events in the story.


Examples of difficulties that Esperanza has faced:
- the sadness over losing your father
- the anger at your uncles for their cruelty
- the surprises you learn about your mother
- the conditions at the camp and compare them to the living conditions you are used to at your home in Aguascalientes, Mexico
