SJHA Mourns Sister Marie Claire Weaver F.D.C.

Sister Marie Claire Weaver F.D.C. a faithful Daughter of Divine Charity for 72 years died peacefully into the loving embrace of her Savior on August 2, 2024. Sister Marie Claire was a graduate of St. Joseph Hill Academy, taught in the High School, served as the Principal after Sister Charlotte, and was also a Provincial Superior of the Daughters of Divine Charity.

 
Visitation and Funeral will take place Monday, August 5, 2024 at St. Joseph Hill Convent. Visitation will begin at 1:00 until Mass at 4:00 p.m. Burial will take place on Tuesday, August 6th at Resurrection Cemetery at 11:00 p.m.

Sister Marie Claire Weaver F.D.C. a faithful Daughter of Divine Charity for 72 years died peacefully into the loving embrace of her Savior on August 2, 2024.

Sister Marie Claire was born Marie Ruby to Alexander and Marie Weaver on May 11, 1932 in Bronx, New York. Along with her younger sister, Lorraine, Marie attended St. Stephen of Hungary church and school until becoming an aspirant and attending St. Joseph Hill Academy High School. She was received into the novitiate of the Daughters of Divine Charity at St. Joseph Hill Convent, Arrochar Park, Staten Island, NY on August 16, 1950, taking the name, Sister Mary Clarissa and made her first profession on August 15, 1952.

Sister Clarissa began her teaching career at St. Ladislaus School in New Brunswick, NJ with other assignments to follow in Chicago Connecticut and New York until, having received her BA at Fordham, she began a Master's Degree in Biology at Syracuse University and moved to St. Joseph Hill Academy High School to teach General Science, Biology and Advanced Biology for many years. In accord with the renewal of religious life during the Vatican Council, Sister Clarissa changed her name to Sister Marie Claire.

Called by the community to accept the principalship of St. Thomas the Apostle school in Old Bridge, NY in 1978, Sister Marie Claire continued her education at Fordham University achieving a Professional Diploma in Educational Administration. She was elected Provincial Superior in 1983, serving St. Joseph Province in this capacity for 8 years. After returning from a year's sabbatical at St. Louis University, Sister worked for a time with homeless families at St. Anthony's Shelter in Jersey City before returning to St. Joseph Hill Academy as principal of the High School in 1996.

Sister Marie Claire continued her ministry of service at St. Mary's Residence in New York City where she worked from 2004 until her illness brought her back home to St. Joseph Hill convent in 2023 where she joyfully celebrated her 90th birthday and 70th anniversary of religious profession.

Sister Marie Claire was known for her spirituality, leadership, keen intellect, beautiful singing voice and her deep gratitude for all in her life as she lived her religious life ''making God's love visible'' as a faithful Daughter of Divine Charity.

She is survived by her religious community and beloved grand-niece, Tawn Marie Farrell. Sister Marie Claire will be missed by all whose lives she touched serving the family of God.

Visitation will be from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm at at St. Joseph Hill Convent, until the Mass of Resurrection which will begin at 4:00pm.

Interment will take place 11:00 am on Tuesday August 6, 2024 at Resurrection Cemetery located at 361 Sharrott Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10309.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Daughters of Divine Charity.
