The 7th Grade Has an Amazing Experience At Medieval Times By: Anika Thakkar 7-2

On Wednesday, May 9th, the seventh grade traveled to Lyndhurst, NJ for a field trip to Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament, which is a dinner theater showing medieval-style games, sword-fighting, and jousting in an arena. The students were exposed, first hand, to the lifestyle of people that lived in the Medieval Times era. Not only did they get to watch a great show, they also got to participate in it! The action of the show and the crowd’s participation mostly came from the audience divided into teams based on colors. There were six knights that each represented a different team/color in competition with each other. St. Joseph Hill Academy was on the red and yellow team so the seventh grade students cheered for the red and yellow knight. The knights rode on horses and fought against each other with real swords! In addition, the students were able to see “Her Majesty The Queen” in action. This show was actually the first time that Medieval Times has had a queen instead of a king presiding over the castle and the festivities. A highlight of the experience for most students was “tasting” a bit of the medieval fare, as they ate chicken right off the bone with their bare hands!
While it was great entertainment, the performance was also educational. The theme of the show was cyberbullying and how to be a better person. One scene specifically depicted how social media can blow up a situation and make someone feel embarrassed or sad. Throughout the performance, students were asked several questions about the Medieval Times “Code of Chivalry,” which included important values to live by today as well -- compassion, courage, respect, charity, and honesty. The show taught the students to be careful about what they do on social media because it may hurt someone, even if they don’t mean it. This theme corresponds with the lessons that Mr. Pucilla teaches us every year about the horrid consequences of cyberbullying.
