7th Grade Social Studies & READING/ELA

ELA Grade 7- Students at this academic level will continue to build on skills developed in prior years. Skill sets include citing textual evidence to support an analysis of an issue, developing deeper critical thinking skills, and incorporating grade appropriate vocabulary into their work. Selected literary works will include a more advanced focus on non-fiction and informational texts. The academic agenda will also include research and public speaking.

Social Studies Grade 7
In Grade 7, we begin our journey into American History. We will learn the foundation upon which America was built. We begin with the Roots of American People and end with the United States construction after the Civil War. It is here we begin to understand that history repeats itself and it is up to us to make a difference in the world.

We will look at the influence other cultures have had on our nation by examining both primary and secondary sources. We will use Document Based Questions (DBQ’s) and political cartoons to help us analyze the important changes that the United States has undergone. This will allow us to use critical thinking to employ a variety of intellectual skills essential to understanding major turning points in United States history.

MONDAY MORNING DROP OFF 12/15/25

Important Drop-Off & Arrival Guidance for Tomorrow

As tomorrow morning’s commute and drop-off are expected to be especially busy, we kindly ask families to plan ahead, use caution, and allow extra time. Our goal is to reduce unnecessary stress, traffic congestion, and parking challenges for everyone.

Please note: No students will be marked late if they arrive before 8:30 AM.

The following are strongly encouraged suggestionsto help ease congestion and ensure a smoother morning for all families. While these are not formal rules, we ask that you thoughtfully consider them when planning your arrival.

Suggested Arrival Times

  • Morning Care begins at 7:00 AM
Families who are able are encouraged to arrive as early as possible.

Parking & Traffic Flow Suggestions

  • Please do not pull all the way up to the Columbia gate, as it becomes extremely difficult to back up and causes delays.
  • Use Stop & Drop whenever possible and avoid parking altogether.
  • If parking is necessary:
    • Park as far away as possible and walk to the PreK entrance.
    • Use the Upper Landis Parking Lot and walk to the main entrance.
    • Park on Major Avenue and enter through the Major Avenue entrance.
  • Do not linger to talk, please vacate parking spots promptly to allow others access.

Health & Wellness Reminder

We cannot stress enough the importance of keeping sick children home.

  • Students who return to school without a doctor’s note may be sent home if they are not well.
  • This creates additional stress, traffic, and disruption for families and staff.
  • Keeping sick children home helps protect the health of our entire community and prevents further complications.

Dress Code Reminder

All students, faculty, and staff should wear Hill wear or gym uniforms tomorrow and Tuesday (this includes Christmas-themed attire).
Everyone must wear a coat and be dressed appropriately for the cold weather.

Thank you for your cooperation, patience, and understanding. By working together and planning ahead, we can make tomorrow morning smoother and safer for everyone.

IMPORTANT-FLU PROTOCOLS

Dear Families,
Guidelines for Students who are Sick or have the Flu.
Please be vigilant and if a student feels sick keep them home and get them tested.
If a student tests positive for the flu, children are not to return to school until they are at least fever free
for 48-72 hours, as they are still considered to be contagious for about a week.
If your child is diagnosed with the flu, they must not come to school until they are cleared by a doctor.
Any student who comes to school sick or with a fever will be sent home to insure the health and well
being of everyone.
All tests can be made up upon return. No student with pending flu tests may attend school until the results
come back negative. They will require clearance from a doctor.
This also applies to students absent for 3 or more days. No student absent for 3 days (unless for
bereavement) may return to school without a note from a doctor.
If your child does not have the flu, but has had a fever, they should not return to school until they are
fever free for at least 24 hours (without fever reducing medication).
The same applies to vomiting and or/ “sensitive” stomach and bowel issues. Keep them home until you
are certain they are fully recovered.
If they return to school and we are made aware that they are not within these guidelines, they will be sent
home.
Take all precautions to prevent the spread of germs both at home and in school. Talk to your children and
reinforce the idea that they must constantly wash their hands throughout the day, especially after they use
the restrooms, both at school and at home.
We here at school will remind them as well. Upon return from school each day, their uniforms should be
aired out and/or washed. Additionally, we encourage them to use hand sanitizer between hand washings,
within reason.
The influenza surveillance report is available on the NYSDOH's public website at:
http://www.health.ny.gov/diseases/communicable/influenza/surveillance/
Flu Vaccine Requirements and Exclusion from School:
Between July 1 and December 31, all children ages 6 months to 59 months must receive one dose of flu
vaccine if they attend day care, Head Start, Pre-K or nursery school.
Students who are noncompliant will be excluded from returning to school on January 5th.
Have a Blessed Day,
Mr. Hansen

Boosterthon

St. Joseph Hill Academy Families,

It’s time to rally together for our St. Joseph Hill Academy Fun Run fundraiser! Our 2025 Boosterthon campaign will bring STEM to life through professional-grade microscopes, digital cameras, electronic balances, and state-aligned investigation kits that enable our young scientists to explore and discover. Early childhood STEM kits will nurture scientific curiosity from the beginning of students' educational journey at SJHA.

We would also like to invest further in essential safety equipment, storage solutions, and outdoor learning enhancements that will allow students to conduct environmental studies and nature-based investigations safely.

By supporting these improvements, you're helping cultivate the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers. Every donation is an investment in scientific discovery, student safety, and the bright futures of our students.

Sign up Challenge: If 75% of Saint Joseph Hill Academy students sign up on mybooster.com, the WHOLE school will have a Dress Down Day!

Register your student on MyBooster.com and secure your student’s first donation of $1 per minute or $35 total and they’ll score a FREE Urban Air ULTIMATE Pass  to jump, fly, and explore the park!
