Music
The comprehensive music curriculum at St. Joseph Hill Academy serves students from Pre-K-4 through Grade 8, recognizing that the arts are unique forms of knowledge and expression. Through music education, young people develop the ability to give creative and critical expression to their deepest thoughts and insights about themselves, God, and the world around them.
Students cultivate an appreciation for music while actively preparing for various Masses, prayer services, and performances at assemblies and ceremonies. Our lessons are thoughtfully coordinated with classroom and subject teachers to provide an enriching interdisciplinary experience, reinforcing academic subjects by seamlessly integrating them into musical learning.
Pre-K-4 through Grade 2: Singing instruction is enhanced through movement in general music classes, creating an engaging, multi-sensory learning environment that builds foundational musical understanding.
Grades 3-8: Students explore essential musical concepts including melody, harmony, rhythm, form, expression, timbre, and counterpoint. These elements are taught and practiced through active singing experiences that bring musical theory to life.
Fifth Grade Choir: Fifth grade students have the special privilege of serving as the school choir for Masses, prayer services, ceremonies, and events. All appropriate musical selections are carefully prepared during their scheduled music classes, fostering both musical excellence and spiritual leadership.
Our curriculum celebrates both patriotic and religious music while encouraging discussion and appreciation of cultural musical traditions from around the world. As a school focused on providing STREAM education, we incorporate innovative digital projects including lyric writing, digital storyboards, PowerPoint presentations, and music videos.
The entire student body joyfully prepares and performs in themed Grandparent's Day celebrations, learning songs from past generations and creating meaningful intergenerational connections. These special performances are captured in YouTube videos that preserve these cherished memories.
Teacher: Mrs. Regina Innocente, music teacher and pianist, has been sharing her passion for music education at SJHA since 1999. Mrs. Innocente serves as the accompanist for elementary school events and holds a Masters of Art Degree in Learning with Emerging Technologies, which proved to be effective during the pandemic and continues to be beneficial in current and future digital education initiatives.
